Writing on an Infinite Canvas: Outline, Draft, Connect

Linear documents force your writing into order before you know what you think. On a canvas, scenes, arguments and fragments float freely — so you can find the structure instead of forcing it.

A blank document is a tyrant. It demands a first line, then a second, in order, before you know what the piece even is. Writing on a canvas breaks that spell — every fragment, scene and argument is a card you can move, group and connect until the shape reveals itself.

Drop your ideas as loose notes across the board. A great opening line here, a half-formed argument there, a fact you want to use somewhere. Nothing has to be in order yet. When patterns emerge, drag the cards into sequence and draw the through-line.

Structure you can see

You do not find the structure by starting at line one. You find it by seeing all the pieces at once.
